A Village Girl’s Dream Home: Where Nature, Family, Books, and Tradition Live Together

“Home is not the place where you keep your furniture. Home is the place where your soul finds peace.”

Whenever someone asks me,

“What’s your home decoration style?”

I smile.

Because my answer isn’t Modern, Minimalist, Scandinavian, or Luxury Contemporary.

My answer is…

Nature.

Not because it’s trendy.

Because it’s my identity.

I am a village girl.

And I believe that once you’ve grown up surrounded by open skies, green fields, birdsong, and fresh air, your heart never truly leaves that life.

The Home That Raised Me

People often think I’m describing my dream house.

The truth is…

I’m describing the home that raised me.

I was fortunate to grow up in a house where nature wasn’t something we visited on weekends.

Nature was part of everyday life.

My childhood was filled with sunlight entering through large windows, birds singing every morning, the fragrance of wet soil after rain, flowering plants blooming around the house, a spacious courtyard where the family gathered, and a backyard that gave us food as well as memories.

Even today, when I go home, I don’t just feel relaxed.

I feel complete.

That house taught me something no architecture book ever could—

The richest homes aren’t decorated with expensive things. They are decorated with love, light, laughter, and life.

Our Home Is Traditional in Values, Modern in Living

Many people imagine village homes as outdated.

Our home isn’t like that.

It beautifully combines traditional wisdom with modern comforts.

We have modern appliances, technology, comfortable bedrooms, and everything needed for today’s lifestyle.

Yet we have never disconnected ourselves from nature.

We still choose fresh air over closed rooms.

Morning sunlight over artificial lighting.

Open spaces over unnecessary walls.

Plants over plastic decorations.

Simple living over unnecessary luxury.

For me, progress doesn’t mean replacing tradition.

Progress means preserving what is valuable while embracing what is useful.

Why Apartments Never Feel Like Home

Today I live in a city because my career requires it.

Like millions of people, I stay in a 2BHK apartment.

I’m grateful because cities provide opportunities, education, healthcare, and growth.

But if I’m honest…

Apartments have never felt like home to me.

Maybe because my heart still looks for an open courtyard.

Maybe because I miss hearing birds instead of traffic.

Maybe because I’m used to seeing trees instead of buildings.

There is nothing wrong with city life.

It simply isn’t the place where my heart feels most alive.

One Day, I’ll Build a Home of My Own

The home I grew up in will always be my parents’ home.

It gave me my roots.

Now I dream of creating my own.

A home where my husband, our children, my parents-in-law, guests, and everyone who becomes part of our lives feels welcomed.

Not a house built to impress society.

A home built to protect peace.

The Location

People ask me,

“If you love village life so much, why not move to a remote village?”

Because I don’t want to run away from the city.

I simply don’t want the city’s noise to become my everyday life.

My dream is a home 20–30 kilometres away from the city.

Close enough for schools, hospitals, markets, work, and good connectivity.

Far enough that mornings begin with birds instead of horns.

Where the night sky still has stars.

Where children know both technology and nature.

The best of both worlds.

The Architecture of My Heart

My dream house faces the east.

Every morning, the first rays of the sun enter our home, filling it with warmth and positivity.

At the centre of the house is a traditional open aangan, inspired by Kerala’s timeless courtyard homes.

Rain falls into the open courtyard.

Around it runs a spacious verandah.

A beautiful wooden Kerala-style swing gently moves with the breeze.

I can already picture the monsoon.

A cup of hot chai.

A good book.

The rhythmic sound of raindrops falling into the courtyard.

The fragrance of wet earth.

The laughter of family.

No phone.

No television.

Just peace.

For me…

That is luxury.

A Home Filled With Light

I don’t want dark rooms.

I want large windows in every room.

I want sunlight to become part of the décor.

Fresh air should flow naturally through the house.

The wind should carry the fragrance of flowers from the garden into every room.

Nature should never remain outside.

It should become part of daily life.

My Temple

The first room I wish to visit every morning isn’t my office.

It is my pooja room.

A peaceful space dedicated to Lord Jagannath.

Every day should begin with gratitude before it begins with work.

Because success without gratitude always feels incomplete.

My Library

If someone asks me which room I love the most…

The answer is simple.

My library.

I’m a book lover.

So I dream of a large library with floor-to-ceiling wooden bookshelves filled with literature, philosophy, history, biographies, spirituality, psychology, science, and timeless classics.

A cozy reading chair beside a large window.

Natural sunlight.

Silence.

And during the monsoon…

Reading while watching the rain fall into the courtyard.

To me, books are not decoration.

Books are lifelong companions.

I want my children to grow up surrounded by books inside the house and trees outside it.

My Workspace

As someone who loves writing and creating, I also dream of a spacious personal workspace.

A peaceful room where ideas become blogs, books, and dreams.

A place where creativity is respected.

Where work feels meaningful.

Where inspiration comes from looking outside the window at nature.

The Kitchen

The kitchen is the heart of every Indian home.

I want mine to combine modern convenience with traditional wisdom.

A spacious open kitchen filled with sunlight and fresh air.

Large windows overlooking the garden.

Modern appliances that make life easier.

And alongside them…

A traditional mitti ka chulha.

Not because I reject technology.

But because I believe every family should know how to be self-reliant.

If fuel supplies are disrupted during an emergency or any difficult situation, I want my family to remain calm and capable of cooking simple meals.

The clay stove also reminds me of childhood.

Food cooked over a slow fire carries a warmth that recipes alone cannot create.

Convenience and tradition can live together.

Every Room Has a Purpose

I dream of five master bedrooms.

One for my husband and me.

One for my parents-in-law, because elders deserve comfort and dignity.

One for our children.

One for guests, because hospitality is part of our culture.

And one for our house helper.

A home should respect every person who lives in it.

Everyone deserves comfort, privacy, and dignity.

The house will also have a spacious drawing room for celebrations.

A large central family hall where everyone naturally gathers.

A practical storeroom.

Because beautiful homes are also functional homes.

The Backyard

If my home has a soul…

It will live in the backyard.

Rows of fresh vegetables.

Spinach.

Tomatoes.

Brinjal.

Pumpkins.

Ladyfinger.

Green chillies.

Coriander.

Fruit trees everywhere.

Mango.

Guava.

Papaya.

Lemon.

Banana.

Pomegranate.

Flowers blooming in every season.

Butterflies.

Birds.

Rainwater harvesting.

A borewell.

Compost made from kitchen waste.

I don’t want my backyard to impress visitors.

I want it to feed my family.

Colours That Feel Like Home

I don’t dream of loud colours.

I love timeless elegance.

Soft banana cream, calming olive green, warm beige, and rich brown.

Premium handcrafted wooden furniture.

Classic.

Elegant.

Comfortable.

A home that still looks beautiful after fifty years.

Because trends change.

Timelessness doesn’t.

Sustainability Is My Lifestyle

Today the world calls it sustainable living.

For me…

It has always been normal.

Growing food.

Saving water.

Planting trees.

Living close to nature.

Respecting every resource.

Taking only what we need.

Giving back more than we take.

That is the future I believe in.

What I Want My Children to Remember

Years later…

I don’t want my children to remember expensive furniture.

I want them to remember picking mangoes from our garden.

Helping me water plants.

Reading books on the verandah.

Watching rain fall into the courtyard.

Drinking chai with grandparents.

Celebrating festivals in the aangan.

Learning gratitude in the pooja room.

Because those become memories.

And memories become home.

Final Thoughts

I don’t dream of the biggest house.

I dream of the most meaningful one.

A home where the first sunlight enters from the east.

Where Lord Jagannath blesses every morning.

Where books fill the shelves.

Where the garden feeds the family.

Where modern technology makes life easier.

Where traditional wisdom keeps us grounded.

Where every person is respected.

Where the kitchen is ready for both convenience and resilience.

Where children grow with curiosity.

Where elders live with dignity.

Where guests feel welcomed.

Where nature is never an afterthought—it is the foundation.

Maybe life has brought me to the city today.

But one day…

I will build this home.

Brick by brick.

Tree by tree.

Book by book.

Prayer by prayer.

Because I don’t just want to own a beautiful house.

I want to create a home that reflects my values, protects the environment, nurtures my family, and reminds us every single day that true wealth is not measured by what we own, but by the peace we feel when we walk through our own front door.

A Few Words Before I End

“You can take a girl out of the village, but you can never take the village out of her heart.”

I carry my village with me.

In the way I dream.

In the way I decorate.

In the way I pray.

In the way I read.

In the way I cook.

And one day…

In the home I build.
