Who is the fictional character you relate to the most?

“We don’t become fictional characters. We simply collect little pieces of them until they quietly become part of our own story.”

Whenever someone asks me,

“Which fictional character do you relate to the most?”

I never know how to answer.

Not because I don’t have an answer.

But because choosing just one feels impossible.

Every meaningful story I’ve read has left something behind—a new perspective, a new habit, or a new dream. Some characters inspired me to write. Some taught me to slow down and appreciate nature. Others reminded me that intelligence, kindness, and simplicity are timeless qualities.

As a village girl who grew up surrounded by open skies, trees, birds, and a home where tradition and modern life beautifully coexist, I often find myself connecting more deeply with characters who value purpose over popularity and peace over perfection.

If I had to introduce myself through fictional women, these five would tell my story better than I ever could.

📚 1. Jo March — The Girl Who Made Me Believe in the Power of Words

If you love books, there’s a good chance you’ve heard of Jo March, the unforgettable heroine of Little Women, the classic novel written by Louisa May Alcott in 1868.

The story follows the lives of four sisters—Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy—as they grow through love, hardship, family, and dreams. While each sister has her own charm, Jo is different. She is outspoken, fiercely independent, curious, and dreams of becoming a writer at a time when women were expected to follow a very different path.

The story has been adapted into several films, but the 2019 movie directed by Greta Gerwig, starring Saoirse Ronan as Jo, introduced this timeless character to a new generation.

People love Jo because she feels real. She makes mistakes, gets angry, laughs loudly, loves deeply, and refuses to stop dreaming.

I relate to Jo because she reminds me why I started writing in the first place.

I don’t write just to publish articles.

I write because I believe words can comfort, inspire, and sometimes even change someone’s life.

Like Jo, I’d rather spend an evening with a good book than in a crowded party. I find joy in learning, reflecting, and creating something meaningful rather than chasing trends.

Every article I write for SHREEBIRD begins with the same hope—

“May these words make at least one person’s day a little better.”

💚 What Jo taught me:
“Don’t wait for permission to follow your dreams. Start writing your story today.”

✨ If you’re like Jo March, you probably…

  • Love books more than shopping.
  • Enjoy meaningful conversations.
  • Dream of creating something that outlives you.
  • Believe learning never truly ends.

🌿 2. Anne Shirley — The Girl Who Found Magic in Ordinary Days

Some people look at a garden and see plants.

Anne Shirley looked at a garden and saw poetry.

Anne is the heart of Anne of Green Gables, a beloved novel written by Lucy Maud Montgomery in 1908. She is an imaginative orphan who is accidentally adopted by siblings Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert. What follows is a heartwarming story of friendship, belonging, resilience, and finding beauty in everyday life.

The Netflix adaptation, Anne with an E, brought Anne’s story to millions of viewers around the world.

Anne is curious, emotional, talkative, creative, and deeply connected to nature. She finds happiness in flowers, rain, trees, sunsets, and even the changing seasons.

Maybe that’s why she feels so familiar to me.

I grew up in a village where mornings began with birdsong instead of traffic. Even today, my dream home isn’t a luxury apartment in the middle of a busy city.

I dream of a home with a large courtyard, sunlight pouring through big windows, a backyard full of fruit trees and vegetables, flowers blooming in every season, birds nesting safely, and a library where I can spend peaceful afternoons with a book.

Anne reminds me that happiness isn’t something we buy.

It’s something we notice.

💚 What Anne taught me:
“A slow life surrounded by nature is not an ordinary life—it is a beautiful one.”

✨ If you’re like Anne Shirley, you probably…

  • Feel happiest outdoors.
  • Stop to admire flowers and sunsets.
  • Believe imagination is a strength.
  • Dream of a peaceful home close to nature.

🎓 3. Naina Catherine Kapur — The Girl Who Proved That Intelligence Is Beautiful

Among Bollywood’s many memorable heroines, Naina Catherine Kapur from Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013) has always felt special to me.

Played beautifully by Deepika Padukone, Naina begins as a shy, hardworking medical student whose life revolves around books, discipline, and responsibility. A life-changing trip with old classmates helps her discover that success isn’t only about achievements—it’s also about friendships, memories, and living fully.

What I admire most is that Naina never abandons her values. She grows, becomes more confident, and embraces life, but she never stops being sincere, intelligent, and kind.

That balance is something I deeply respect.

As someone who genuinely enjoys learning, I relate to Naina’s curiosity and dedication. Books have never been a burden for me—they’ve been companions. Every book I finish leaves me with a new way of thinking.

Naina reminds me that a woman doesn’t have to choose between ambition and kindness.

She can have both.

💚 What Naina taught me:
“Keep learning, but don’t forget to live along the way.”

✨ If you’re like Naina, you probably…

  • Love learning new things.
  • Believe education changes lives.
  • Prefer depth over popularity.
  • Value growth without losing your roots.

✍️ 4. Aisha Banerjee — The Woman Who Taught Me That Dreams Need Discipline

Some people dream of becoming writers.

Aisha Banerjee shows us what it actually takes.

Aisha is one of the lead characters in Wake Up Sid (2009), directed by Ayan Mukerji and played beautifully by Konkona Sen Sharma. She moves to Mumbai with a simple dream—to build a career as a writer. There are no shortcuts, no magical opportunities, and no overnight success. Instead, we see her working quietly, facing rejection, learning every day, and believing in herself even when life feels uncertain.

That is what makes Aisha so inspiring.

She reminds us that passion is important, but discipline is what turns dreams into reality.

I relate to Aisha because writing is more than a hobby for me. Every blog I publish on SHREEBIRD starts with a blank page, a cup of coffee, and one simple question:

“Can these words make someone’s life a little better?”

Like Aisha, I believe meaningful work is built one day at a time. One article. One reader. One lesson. One step.

She reminds me that success isn’t about going viral—it’s about showing up consistently, even when nobody is watching.

💚 What Aisha taught me:
“Talent may open the door, but consistency is what keeps you inside.”

✨ If you’re like Aisha, you probably…

  • Dream of building something meaningful.
  • Enjoy writing or other creative work.
  • Believe patience is a strength.
  • Understand that success takes time.

🌸 5. Lalita — The Woman Who Proved That Simplicity Is the Highest Form of Elegance

In a world that celebrates luxury, Lalita quietly celebrates values.

She is the soul of Parineeta, the timeless novel by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, first published in 1914. The story was beautifully adapted into the Bollywood film Parineeta (2005), where Vidya Balan made her unforgettable debut as Lalita.

Lalita isn’t remembered because she is loud or dramatic.

She is remembered because she is graceful.

She is educated, compassionate, emotionally mature, deeply rooted in family values, and carries herself with quiet confidence. She teaches us that kindness and self-respect can exist together.

Whenever I imagine my future home, I don’t imagine something extravagant.

I imagine peace.

A two-storey home where tradition meets modern living.

A central courtyard filled with sunlight.

A Tulsi plant in the aangan.

A peaceful pooja room.

A library with walls full of books.

A kitchen with modern appliances—but also a traditional clay chulha, because I believe old wisdom still has a place in modern life.

A backyard where flowers bloom beside vegetables, fruit trees feed both family and birds, and children grow up knowing the joy of planting seeds with their own hands.

That dream feels very close to Lalita’s world.

She reminds me that a beautiful life is not built with expensive things.

It is built with meaningful ones.

💚 What Lalita taught me:
“Stay rooted. Trends change, but values never go out of fashion.”

✨ If you’re like Lalita, you probably…

  • Value family over status.
  • Love simplicity with elegance.
  • Believe traditions and progress can coexist.
  • Find joy in creating a warm, welcoming home.

🌼 Final Thoughts

If you ask me today,

“Which fictional character do you relate to the most?”

I’ll still smile.

Because I can’t choose just one.

Jo March taught me to write.

Anne Shirley taught me to notice the beauty around me.

Naina Catherine Kapur taught me that learning never stops.

Aisha Banerjee taught me to keep showing up.

Lalita taught me that a meaningful life is built on values, not appearances.

Together, they remind me of the woman I hope to become.

Not perfect.

Just curious.

Kind.

Rooted.

Always learning.

And always dreaming.

Maybe that’s the real magic of fiction.

The characters may not be real…

But the courage, hope, and wisdom they leave behind certainly are.

“We don’t become fictional characters. We simply carry their best qualities into our own stories.”
